Improving oil quality -> Reducing water and salt contents.

Oil is produced from reservoirs in association with natural formation water or water injection used to maintain or increase production.

This mixture of oil and water is subjected to shearing (pump), and contributes to creating complex emulsions that are well stabilised with natural emulsifiers.

The separation of water from crude oil, commonly called demulsification or dewatering, is important to produce oil meeting commercial specifications. Refineries can only accept oil with very low water and salt contents (less than 0.1% water and 10 ptb salt typically).
